A Classic

Tradition
reveals itself

Located in a former tinsmith’s shop, it was opened on 16 November 1964 by Paulo Guilherme D’Eça Leal (designer for the newspaper O Século) and bought in 1967 by Adriano Oliveira. The elegance and sobriety of the SNOB ‘s décor – inspired by the tradition of English pubs – resonates with the gatherings that, over several generations, have exchanged ideas between its walls covered with shelves that hold books, bottles and souvenirs. At the small square tables of green cloth in the medium light – where white napkins were spread out at closing time – a bohemian crowd has always found a safe space to debate ideas, chart new courses and simply be.

At a time when censorship was rife in Portugal, journalists, politicians and artists found in the Snob the perfect setting for free conversations, without fear of being overheard or chased through the streets. Due to its location in Bairro Alto, where many newspaper offices operated, it became a refuge for journalists and a privileged meeting place for political and cultural personalities who couldn’t do without a Snob steak, a croquette or the famous mango mousse. Always with the serene presence of Mr Albino Oliveira, who arrived at the SNOB in 1975 and worked there for over 40 years, and Mrs Maria, who had been in charge of the kitchen since 1967, the intimacy of the meetings and the comfort of the customers

In its new life, the SNOB is reopening its doors to preserve a historic legacy and be the stage for a present that wants to keep the gatherings of its bohemian soul alive. The upholstery and woodwork have been renovated, but the charisma remains because a classic is always unavoidable. Just ring the bell and all those who want to write the next pages of its history are welcome.
